Apple Vs. Epic Games Lawsuit
As some of you may know, Apple and Epic games are in the middle of a huge
lawsuit. Epic has a game (Fortnite) which was on the App Store but has since been taken off because of the ongoing court battle.
But why? One of the biggest games ever, which has made both companies a ton of money now taken off the store? This is all because Epic Games has a way where you, the player can get in app currency (V-Bucks). With these V- Bucks you can get in game cosmetics such as small appearance changes for your in game avatar.
So say I wanted to buy 500 V-Bucks, I would pay $5. The problem is, that since Fortnite is on the App Store and Apple is marketing the game for Epic, Apple takes 30% of the money made off in app purchases. 30% is huge! In a separate scenario if I wanted to get $10 worth of V-Bucks Apple automatically gets $3 ⅓!
So naturally, Epic got sick of this. They said that it’s okay if Apple wanted to take 5 or maybe 10% of the profits, but not 30%. So they undercut Apple and offered users a much cheaper way of getting V-bucks, and they did this in a separate way so Epic would not need to pay Apple 30%.
Apple responded almost immediately and took Fortnite off of their store. Epic retaliated to this by showing players a parody of Apple’s famous 1984 commercial, with Fortnite’s own characters.
Since then Apple and Epic are fighting it out in the courts with no end in sight. People who play Fortnite on their IPads’ and IPhones (including me) can still play Fortnite, but just not the latest version. People predict that the best case scenario is that this battle will end in mid 2021, but even that is not certain.
In the meantime, you can still play Fortnite on a different device, (like me). These include: The Xbox, The PS series, a PC and a Nintendo Switch.
